A weather-resistant barrier must be applied to all exterior surfaces. Application must be consistent with the vapor barrier manufacturer. Casa di Sassi recommends that a double vapor barrier is installed along with Ice and Water Shield around all doors and windows.
2.5 lb galvanized lath (mesh) is required for any non-masonry surface. Mesh should be installed from the ground up overlapping all edges by 2 inches. Fasten with galvanized nails or staples. Lath with felt paper backing is NOT recommended.
Apply mortar over lath using a flat trowel. Spread mortar evenly approximately ¼ inch thick. The mortar should be applied smoothly, avoiding overly rough surfaces. Mix mortar to a consistency that allows it to sit on a flat trowel without running off.
Select stones that portray an even yet random appearance. Use a trowel to cover the entire back of the stone with ½ inch of mortar. Firmly press each piece against the wall moving it in a side to side motion. Allow the mortar to ooze slightly without dripping over the stone.
Each piece can be trimmed to fit using a masonry diamond or carbide blade.
Stone should be installed in a level horizontal manner. Vertical joints should be staggered at random. All joints should be consistent in width.
All exterior applications must be grouted. “Dry Layed” applications are strongly discouraged in northern states.
Type N or M mortar is recommended for installation. Typically mortar is mixed with clean mason sand at a 1:2 ratio mix (1) mortar, (2) sand.
Squeeze mortar into the joints in a smooth consistent motion. Fill the joints according to preference without allowing the mortar to touch the front of the stone. Let mortar set without touching until it is firm yet pliable to the touch.
Using a metal striker that fits the width of the joints, clean the surface of the joints as smooth as possible. Be sure there are no holes in the mortar joints.
Use a soft dry construction grade brush to finish cleaning the joints. Allow the joints to dry enough that the brush does not leave streak marks in the mortar. Dry time may vary based on moisture in the stone, in the air and the air temperature.
Premier recommends using a mortar color that matches the stone for grouting. This helps create a natural look and enhances the stone.
To clean the surface of the stone, use water and a soft brush. Do not clean with any acid based cleaners or wire brushes this may cause discoloration of the stone. Mortar is best cleaned off the stone immediately.
