What is ASTM International?
Formerly known as the American Society for Testing and Materials, ASTM International is a globally recognized organization dedicated to positively impacting consumer confidence. Charles B. Dudley, Ph.D., founded ASTM in 1898 while working as a chemist for the Pennsylvania Railroad. The name was changed in 2001 to reflect its international reach, and its headquarters remain in West Conshohocken, PA.

Why is ASTM 1670 Certification important?
There are ASTM standards for all kinds of industries, and ASTM C1670 applies specifically to manufactured stone veneer. It outlines everything from acceptable materials in the products to minimum physical requirements to dimensional allowances and more.
After years of developing and refining the standards in ASTM C1670, it was adopted by both the International Building Code (IBC) and the International Residential Code (IRC) in 2018. Today, nearly all states and municipalities have adopted ASTM C1670 as part of their local building codes.
Certification of adherence to ASTM C1670 minimum standards is important to homeowners, business owners and product distributors for two reasons:
Ensuring the safety, structural integrity and fire protection of the building where the certified products will be used
Avoiding building permit delays and possible legal consequences for noncompliance with minimum standards

We voluntarily provide Safety Data Sheets for our stone veneers – even though the OSHA Hazard Communication Standard does not require it – to ensure safe handling.
We make our satisfactory IAPMO evaluation results publicly available to assure installers and end users that our products comply with IRC and IBC standards for composition, strength and durability.
