Understanding Manufactured Stone Veneer Patterns
What kind of stone pattern do you envision in your home? Are you going for a traditional or rustic look? Or does your taste lean more toward clean lines and contemporary trends? Perhaps you’re hoping to achieve a timeless effect with a vintage-inspired pattern stone wall.
Whatever your aesthetic inspiration may be, there are manufactured stone veneer types, designs and styles to suit it. The talented artisans at Casa di Sassi pride themselves on creating a wide array of stone veneer patterns that mimic the beauty of nature. But sometimes the choices can feel overwhelming!
We put together this stone pattern guide to help you select the stone veneer profile that helps bring your interior or exterior design dreams to life. Let’s dig into the four most common stone patterns available and look at:
- What makes each pattern unique
- Which architectural styles each one complements
- Why grouting vs dry-stacking matters
- How to install stone veneer for years of worry-free beauty
Manufactured Stone Veneer Patterns
The designers at Casa di Sassi are self-proclaimed rock-hunting nerds. They love finding inspiration for the stone veneer mold design process in both man-made structures and the natural world. And while each profile we develop in our Apple Creek, Ohio, facilities is 100% unique, they typically follow one of four basic stone patterns that masons have used for centuries:
Mosaic Pattern
The mosaic form is probably the oldest of all the stone patterns. Walls laid by hand followed the irregular shapes and sizes of stones found in nature, resulting in a pleasantly random effect. If you’re looking to create a European style in your home, a mosaic stone veneer pattern is a great choice. It’s also compatible with traditional Americana aesthetics, as well as rustic design styles, like farmhouse, cottage and southwest.
Fieldstone
Casa di Sassi’s Fieldstone profile delivers essential mosaic stone pattern charm. Our artisans took inspiration from the highlands of the New England states to craft this handsomely rugged profile. It features a variety of stone sizes and shapes with distinctive edges and faces that are fitted together like a jigsaw puzzle. Choose from two warm color palettes – red-tinged Gola and golden Legno – to add depth and dimension to a fireplace, accent wall or exterior project.
Strip Pattern
If symmetry is your jam, a strip stone pattern might be for you. This pattern features fairly uniform stone shapes and sizes, typically rectangles, arranged in slightly offset rows. The effect can be calming and skews more traditional than some other stone patterns. However, the symmetrical look is so versatile that it’s truly timeless, bringing authenticity to a range of interior designs from rustic to contemporary.
Brick
While there are stone veneer types for every aesthetic, strip stone veneer patterns cover a lot of design ground. Whether you’re reviving the historic look of a Victorian home, leveling up a modest bungalow or adding character to new construction, our Brick profile is up to the task. We offer three colorways to tailor this strip stone pattern to your tastes: cool and crisp Niveo, warm and neutral Neve, and dark and dramatic Carbone.
Square & Rectangle Pattern
Looking for some middle ground between the random mosaic stone patterns and the rigid symmetry of a strip pattern? You’ve found it in the unique look of a square and rectangular stone pattern. As the name suggests, this pattern includes both square- and rectangular-cut stones fitted together in a fairly linear configuration. Depending on the color choice and face finish, this type of pattern can produce a very modern or quite rustic effect. Our craftspeople leaned on its versatility to create stone veneer patterns with timeless allure for a wide range of possibilities!
Yorkshire
With clean lines and neutral tones, our Yorkshire profile brings a contemporary sensibility to the square and rectangle stone pattern. Wall treatments in this subtly striking colorway called Sombre elevate any room of a home, from the kitchen to the den to the home office to the master suite. Pair it with anything from marble countertops to retro furnishings to quirky decor or sumptuous fixtures.
Volterra
Choose our Volterra profile for a slightly more rugged take on the square and rectangle stone veneer pattern. Unique bed face texture amps up the visual intrigue and three color choices let you tailor the historic appearance to your taste. Go for creamy Niveo to elevate a neutral palette. Opt for Terracina to add warmth to contemporary furnishings. Level up the drama of rustic or vintage-inspired decor with the varied tones of Turin.
Ledge Pattern
The ledge stone pattern has remained popular since the 1950s. It’s characterized by rectangular stones of roughly equal size and shape fitted tightly together so that no mortar is visible between them. One of our favorite exterior stone ideas for transforming a home is to use a ledge stone veneer pattern around the entryway or on the lower level. Pair it with cedar shingles or board and batten siding in a contrasting color for a classic effect. Whether it’s on a stone pattern wall in the den or the entire facade of a house, the ledge look brings mid century modern magic to any project!
EZ Ledge
Casa di Sassi’s EZ Ledge profile brings serious versatility to your design dreams. A variety of stone shapes and sizes amplify the softly textured cleft faces that mirror natural formations found in the eastern and western United States. Four color choices let you build a decor palette around this stone veneer pattern: Creamy Niveo adds lightness to traditional or contemporary furnishings. Golden Matera warms up neutral hues. High-contrast Gola delivers modern drama. Sweet Cremona features enough variation to complement any color scheme.
Kwik Stack
If maximum visual interest is your goal, our Kwick Stack profile is your go-to ledge stone veneer pattern pick. Thinner-cut rectangles stack together tightly for a highly tactile effect that draws the eye no matter where you install this stone veneer. Plus, three color choices let you embrace a cool contemporary look, warm neutrality or deep, dark drama.
Stone Veneer Installation Types
All Casa di Sassi stone veneer patterns are lightweight and easy to install. Whether it’s an indoor or outdoor project, preparing the load-bearing surface onto which it will be applied is of utmost importance. Moisture barriers are strictly necessary for exterior applications, but they may not be required for an interior pattern stone wall that never comes into contact with water.
Grouting stone veneer projects can be a matter of preference. Most pros have sound reasons for why and how to grout stone veneer projects, but it really depends on the specific type of installation. You have two choices for this: mortared or dry stack. Let’s look at each one separately:
Mortared Stone Veneer
Similar to the way mortar keeps kilned bricks or natural stones in place, a mortared stone pattern wall has a finished and traditional look. The grout used with stone veneer is more akin to the grout needed for tile floors than brick mortar, but it’s a similar process. The installer uses a grout bag – which looks like a large cake decorating bag – to squeeze grout into the spaces between the stone faces. Then, any excess grout is wiped away, leaving the stone faces to protrude slightly. The only drawback to grouting stone veneer is the possibility of water and moss degrading it over time, which typically only affects outdoor installations. A high-quality sealant can prevent or slow that wear and tear.
Dry Stack Stone Veneer
The alternative to a mortared stone pattern wall is a dry stack installation. This option appears to have no grout between the stones, which look to be stacked directly on top of one another. It’s an eye-catching look that dovetails beautifully with midcentury modern aesthetics, as well as most contemporary decorating techniques. It can be a little tricky to get just right, though, which is where the benefits of hiring professional stone veneer installers come into play. These seasoned experts can help you decide between mortared or dry stack stone veneer patterns for the look you want, then complete the job quickly and efficiently for a seamless finished product. And with no messy grout, there should be little to no cleanup or maintenance necessary afterward!
